My pet hate when I'm decorating any house is screw alignments on plugs, lights switches etc, I don't understand why electricians or other electrical contractors and sometimes previous painters and decorators don't have the pride to line them up, as you can see from the image below, whenever I need to paint or decorate a wall or feature wall with sockets on I always straighten the screws so that they face up to match the switches direction, I know it seems over the top but I also do it with door handles or any screw that has a flat head.
In my painting & decorating world I like my clients to feel I go the extra mile, they may not even notice I have done this as I would also line up all the screws in that room so that they are all the same even if I haven't decorated that wall. I started with my Zinsser paper tiger perforating the wallpaper so that water could be applied with Zinsser Diff, this is a solution added to a water sprayer to aid in the breakdown of glue and enzymes so that hopefully the paper comes off the wall with ease, after leaving the solution on the wall for 20 minutes I then tried to get the paper off, it would not work, I then soaked and soaked the walls and tried again for many hours, still it would not budge, the only alternative was to strip the top layer of wood chip with a heavy duty 6" blade and then wet the backing to strip it off the wall, this worked but believe it or not this room took 2,5 days to get it all off the walls. After stripping all the wallpaper in the room, I then found plenty of blown plaster and cracks so the best way forward was to get a plasterer in to skim the wall so that the room has a nice smooth crack free surface to work with, I'm going back in to paint & decorate this room next week starting with a mist coat ( a watered down layer of paint to seal the plaster) then 2x coats of emulsion paint on top. I will update you when it's complete. East Grinstead Painter & Decorator Social Media plays a big part of my contact with new clients and existing clients, in this modern world if you're not in contact on these platforms then you're a dying breed of painter & decorator. I often use social media to promote my business, chat with my clients by Direct Message, arrange quotes, bookings etc. When everyone now has such busy lives it's often quicker than email to draft a quick Facebook or Twitter message to someone. Some people ask how do I find the time to run all these social media streams and also paint, decorate, hang wallpaper, sand etc etc.. well it's quick and easy just post on the go or in a tea break it takes seconds to upload a post or image about my day it keeps people informed as I go and helps build an audience with my prospective clients. If you would like to keep up to date with one of my constant social media streams then please look at my Facebook page, it's a bit more in depth regarding all aspects of my painter and decorator adventures and tends to have more images, text than Twitter. I also have a Google+page but for now here is the Facebook page below just click the link. I have many clients in the East Grinstead, Forest Row & Copthorne areas that I decorate for, I would love to add you to my list of satisfied home owners. See the bottom of the page for more images during the painting process The first thing you need to do when getting ready to paint any stairs is preparation, first have a good wipe down with a rag with some Virosol, Krud Kutter or similar cleaner de-greaser and get all the dust and grime off the stringers, rails and spindles, wait until it's dry & then use a professional quality sander like the one i'm using, it's dustless & connects to a dust extractor, the model i'm using is a Festool RTS 400 EQ and has variable speed which is a very useful addition. Start with a higher abrasive like a 180 grit or similar to get the top layer of paint off, you don't often need to take it back to bare wood, this is just to strip away the top layer of grime & any chips or scratches, if a previous oil based coating or paint has been applied then you do need to prepare as much as you can for a top quality paint finish, once you have power sanded down as much as you can reduce the abrasive to a more subtle 240 grit this will make the surface smoother with less scratches, then get a decent quick drying wood filler like Toupret and fill any imperfections & dents (remember don't overfill too much) wait until the filler is fully dry and sand down to a smooth finish, use a vacuum and a dust brush to sweep away any remaining dust particles & then use a tack cloth to pick up any small residues so it does not contaminate your paint and more importantly your paint finish. Then apply a high grade trade quality undercoat ( I always undercoat regardless of the surface quality as its a good base for starting from scratch again meaning you get a flawless result) make sure you buy a top quality synthetic brush like a Picasso, Purdy or a Rembrandt then apply one or two thin coats of undercoat, this will normally be perfect, once dry paint with your choice of top coat, normally this would be white gloss or satin but obviously you can use any colour you wish. I painted this example below this week in East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19. The paints & materials used for this job Dulux trade Undercoat, Armstead QD Satin top coat & Abranet Abrasives for the power sander, Toupret Wood Filler, tack cloths and a little Virosol to clean down. Paint brushes used were a Picasso Flat 2" and a Picasso Blaze Angled 1.5" East Grinstead Painter & Decorator October 2015 Should you need a quote for painting & decorating in East Grinstead, Forest Row, Copthorne, Crawley, Felbridge, Smallfield, Edenbridge, Lingfield, Ardingly, Dormansland or anywhere within a 15 mile radius of East Grinstead please contact me. www.paint-it-now.co.uk I've recently been re painting a boat house in the lovely village of Ashurst Wood, West Sussex, this is a new client that I had previously painted an annex for when family members stay over. First I sanded the boat house with my dustless Mirka sander, it took the best part of a morning to get the loose wood stain off that was previously applied by the owners, after I sanded I wiped down all the surfaces with a damp cloth to get any excess dust and grit off the wood surface, I then proceeded to paint Sadolin Superdec onto the walls, I was painting on 2x coats so although the first one matters, anything that does not get painted will be painted on the next pass over with the brush. The final result was a perfect finish on an old boat house, Superdec is a quality opaque paint that lasts for years if applied correctly. I really loved this job, the weather was great for April and the view I had over Ashdown Forest was amazing. Products used Sadolin Superdec (Mixed to a RAL code to match the clients cedral weatherboard on the house) Abranet sand paper for the Mirka dustless sander Sanding blocks Water Brushes used Picasso 2" Angled Silvertip 2" Angled Picasso 1" Straight I hope you like the Painter & Decorator images of this job, should you wish to have your shed painted like this please contact me by visiting my contact page or website www.paint-it-now.co.uk I'm a local East Grinstead Painter & Decorator, I'm also a trusted trader, I have many satisfied clients from East Grinstead, Crawley, Ashurst Wood, Haywards Heath, Copthorne, Lingfield, Forest Row and many many more. Your only Painter & Decorator in East Grinstead, Crawley Down, Copthorne, Felbridge, Forest Row and surrounding areas. I finally finished painting the Memorial bench in Dormansland, Surrey, it took a couple of days to paint as I had to keep coming back because of rain, however I think it's turned out ok in the end. I used 240 grit sandpaper to sand down manually as I could not use any power tools for obvious reasons, I then used Rustins Oak wood stain, this is a water based wood stain that is very good for painting outside garden furniture. Rustins is very quick drying, it's durable & available in 750ml cans of gloss or satin. It gives very long lasting protection to all external wood, & is touch dry within 30 minutes, you can re coat the wood stain after 4 hours.
Painter, Decorator & Memorial bench restorer Dormansland, Surrey I've been asked by a very sweet old lady to refurbish this memorial bench in Dormansland, Surrey. Dormansland is a stones throw away from my "patch" in East Grinstead It's a memorial bench to her husband and although it's generally in good condition it needs sanding back and re wood staining, I will document the process and put the finished results and image up on this blog. |
